Depression….a new approach

Depression is one of the most common emotional health issues in our current society. This has only increased following the devastating impact of COVID and other world events. We are surrounded by bad news all day.

We are also surrounded by advertisements and people that tell us that scientists are on the verge of finding the cure for depression. Often the messaging in this, is that in order to get your life under control, or in order, you must first get rid of your depression. All you have to do is take the drug your Dr offers.

My therapy offers a different approach.

Coming from the perspective of living an authentic life, lets examine depression from the stance of what you are putting or not putting into your life.

What is your depression telling you?

The answer will be different for everyone, however, what if we asked “how are you acting in ways that are pulling you away from the things in life that you value?” Paradoxically, all the well-intentioned attempts to suppress or eliminate depressing thoughts, feelings and memories often intensify them. When that happens, you start to constrict your activities, feelings and thoughts with the aim of being less depressed, only to find that you are more depressed. This leads to a very narrow life that is only a fraction of what it can be.

You are here because you want loving relationships, meaningful work, positive life experiences and to improve you spiritual wellbeing. This is a vital and authentic life. Pursuing a vital and authentic life is a commitment to living a life in which you will experience your feelings and thoughts, both wanted and unwanted, and to do what is valuable and meaningful for you.

This is not in line with the current mantra from contemporary culture which does not support this approach. Working with me is about taking a different approach where you will learn about your values and what makes you get up in the morning. We will focus on being flexible by taking notice of what’s working and what’s not working and we will take action. Are you ready?
